Clinical features and histopathological analysis of 91 cases of basal cell adenoma of salivary gland

    • Objective To analyze the clinical features and histopathological features of basal cell adenoma of the salivary gland, and to summarize its clinical features and pathological features in order to improve the understanding and diagnosis of basal cell adenoma of the salivary gland. Methods A total of 91 cases of basal cell adenomas with pathological findings and complete clinical data from 2009 to 2018 were collected. The clinical features and histopathological findings were analyzed, and the correlation between clinical features and histopathology was further analyzed. Results The age of patients was 21-81 years old, with an median age of (55±12.9) years, including 52 females and 39 males; 82 cases occurred in the parotid gland, 4 cases in the submandibular gland, 3 cases in the palate, 1 case in the pterygopalatine and 1 case in gingival site. The majority of patients presented with clinical manifestations of painless, isolated, slowly increasing round or round-like mass with clear boundaries, 18 patients with local pain symptoms. Pathological examination showed that the tumor diameter of 91 patients was 0.8-7 cm, with an average of (2.4±1.1) cm. The capsule was intact or not obvious. The tumor was mainly composed of basal like cells. It could be cystic and could invade adjacent adipose tissue, or even could be malignant. Conclusions Basal cell adenoma of salivary gland is a rare benign tumor, which is often found in the superficial lobe of parotid gland. It is easy to be confused with other diseases in clinical practice. Surgical resection can obtain good therapeutic effect and good clinical prognosis.
