A comparative study of PICC catheterization with modified cuff device and tourniquet in elderlytumor emaciated patients

    • Objective To explore the application of modified sphygmomanometer cuff device in elderly patients with tumor emaciation during peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) catheterization. Methods A total of 60 elderly tumor emaciated patients with BMI less than 18.0 kg/m2 were selected from Xuzhou Central Hospital. They were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group (30 cases in each). In the experimental group, the modified sphygmomanometer cuff device was used for PICC catheterization guided by ultrasound. Meanwhile, in the control group, the tourniquet method was used for PICC catheterization guided by ultrasound. The two groups were compared for relevant indicators. Results The success rate of one-time puncture in the experimental group (93.3%) was significantly higher than that in the control group (26.7%) (P<0.01). The success rate of primary catheterization (93.3%) was significantly higher than that of the control group (60.0%) (P<0.05). The successful time of puncture in the experimental group (41.0 ± 7.1) min was significantly lower than that in the control group (84.6 ± 43.0) min (P<0.01). The incidence of mechanical phlebitis, thrombus and catheter infection in the experimental group was lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusions The modified sphygmomanometer cuff device can improve the success rate of one-time puncture and catheterization guided by ultrasound, save the time of puncture, and effectively avoid the occurrence of complications, which is worth promoting.
