Effectiveness of mecobalamin combined with neurotropin in the treatment of residual neurological symptoms after lumbar disc herniation surgery

    • Objective To investigate the therapeutic effectiveness of mecobalamin combined with neurotropin in the treatment of residual neurological symptoms after lumbar disc herniation surgery. Methods A total of 74 lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion patients who were admitted into the Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University from September 2016 to May 2019 due to postoperative residual neurological symptoms were enrolled. All the patients underwent posterior lumbar interbady fusion by the same physicians. They were randomly divided into two groups (n=37): a mecobalamin group (group A) and a mecobalamin combined with neurotropin group (group B). The Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score, VAS score and EMG were used to compare the effectiveness of the two groups. Results After 14 days, 1 month, 3 months of treatment, both groups presented increases in JOA score and decreases in VAS score than those before treatment (P< 0.05). According to EMG results, one month after treatment, the conduction velocity of the femoral nerve in both groups was higher than that before treatment (P<0.05).Moreover, group B presented increases in JOA score and the conduction velocity of the femoral nerve as well as decreases in VAS score, compared with group A. Conclusions Mecobalamin combined with neurotropin can effectively relieve residual neurological symptoms after lumbar disc herniation surgery.
