Effect of two cell growth factors combined with sodium hyaluronate in the treatment of dry eyes after cataract operation

    • Objective To observe the clinical effect of recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor(rbFGF) eye gel, human epidermal cell growth factor(rhEGF) eye drops and sodium hyaluronate eye drops in the treatment of dry eyes after cataract surgery. Methods A total of 135 patients with dry eyes after cataract surgery who were admitted to Daxing Teaching Hospital, Capital Medical University from October 2020 to September 2021 were enrolled. They were randomly divided into three groups(n=45): an observation group Ⅰ, who were treated with rhEGF eye drops combined with sodium hyaluronate eye drops; an observation group Ⅱ, who were treated with rbFGF eye gel combined with rhEGF eye drops and sodium hyaluronate eye drops and a control group, who were treated with sodium hyaluronate eye drops. The three groups were treated for consecutive eight weeks. Then, the three groups were compared for clinical effective rate, ocular surface function fluorescein stain test score(FL), Schirmer Ⅰ test(SIT), and break up time(BUT), 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire(NEI-VFQ-25) scores, and Ocular Surface Disease Index(OSDI) Questionnaire scores. The levels of inflammatory related factors intercellular adhesion related factor-1(ICAM-1), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), and interleukin-33(IL-33) in tears were measured and adverse reactions were recorded. Results The effective rate of the control group, observation group Ⅰ and observation group Ⅱ was 73.81%,90.24% and 95.24% respectively(P<0.05). After eight weeks of treatment, the observation group Ⅱ and the observation group Ⅰ showed significantly lower FL scores, but higher SIT and BUT than the control group(P<0.05), where changes in FL, SIT and BUT were more obvious in the observation group Ⅱ(P<0.05). After treatment, the NEI-VFQ-25 scores in all three groups showed an increasing trend, while OSDI scores showed a decreasing trend. After four and eight weeks of treatment, the observation group Ⅰ and the observation group Ⅱ presented significantly higher NEI-VFQ-25 scores and lower OSDI scores than the control group, where increased NEI-VFQ-25 scores and decreased OSDI scores were found in the observation group Ⅱ, compared with those in the observation group Ⅰ(P<0.05). After eight weeks of treatment, the levels of ICAM-1, TNF-α and IL-33 in the observation group Ⅱ and observation group Ⅰ were significantly lower than those in the control group(P<0.05), but the changes in observation group Ⅱ were more obvious(P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions among the three groups(P>0.05).Conclusions Local application of rbFGF gel combined with rhEGF eye drops and sodium hyaluronate eye drops is more beneficial to relieve the clinical symptoms of patients with dry eyes after cataract surgery, improve ocular surface function, improve the quality of life, and reduce eye inflammation and injury, with good safety.
