Abstract
Objective To analyze the clinical characteristics of patients with intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) and analyze the factors influencing visual prognosis. MethodsA total of 76 eyes from 76 patients with IOFBs who were admitted into our hospital from March 2012 to December 2015 were collected and analyzed retrospectively. Factors including gender, age, injury site, the property and location of forgein body, the interval between the injury and surgery, the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and complications such as vitreous hemorrhage, cataract, retinal detachment and endophthalmitis were evaluated. The association between visual outcome and injury site, the location of IOFBs, retinal detachment, endophthalmitis and the effects of IOFBs on visual overcome were statistically analyzed. ResultsThere was 12.41% of inpatients with ocular traumas who suffered from IOFBs. The ratio of men to women was 11.67∶1, with the mean age of (41.45±15.384) years. The BCVA was (1.513 9±1.063) LogMAR before surgery and increased to (0.931 6±0.793) LogMAR, which was statistcal different (t=3.762, P=0.000). The presence of retinal detachment was the main factor that influences visual prognosis (P=0.006). ConclusionVitrectomy is a feasible, effective approach in the surgical management of IOFBs. The presence of retinal detachment was the main factor that influences visual prognosis.
